While crowd numbers at the weekly Capital Region Farmers Market (CRFM) at EPIC are down due to social distancing measures, sales are consistent with โnormalโ numbers, according to CRFM manager Sarah Power.
Ms Power said the Market will continue to open for the foreseeable future with โcareful COVID-19 guidelines in placeโ. It will be open this Saturday morning 11 April for customers to purchase fresh produce over the Easter long weekend.
โWe suggest, if possible, that just one member from each household attends to help reduce the number of people attending,โ she said.
โMany of our stallholders have adapted to the current situation and have introduced new ways people can buy from them, including pre-ordering and pick-up at the Market, ordering directly from the stallholder and home delivery.โ
Ms Power said crowds at the Market recently have been โfantasticโ, having taken on board social distancing, hygiene requirements and only having one person per household, with sales consistent with โnormalโ numbers.
โThe Market is down to less than a third of our overall attendance but sales are still consistent to our normal attendance, which is great as this means people are taking on the โone shopper per householdโ message,โ she said.
โSales are still really strong for essential items, showing that our shoppers are making sure they are cooking with fresh and healthy food during this time.
โApproximately 80% of our stallholders are still in attendance, which represents all the essentials of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and seafood, dairy and baked goods.โ
CRFM plans to continue to operate on Saturdays as normal until further notice. In addition to distancing and hygiene measures, stallholders are spread out and ready-to-eat food is available as takeaway only. Shoppers are also encouraged to avoid congregating.
โFor the safety of all our shoppers, the biggest rule we want people to follow is to just shop and go,โ Ms Power said.
โWe want to continue to reduce the numbers of people congregating at the Market as much as possible and encourage all our shoppers to get in and out in the least amount of time possible.โ
CRFM will be open on Saturday 11 April 7.30-11.30am at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC).
