The ACT’s road toll has risen to five following a fatal collision involving two vehicles in Barton, which occurred on Monday afternoon, 21 October.
About 2.10pm, a car and a fire truck collided at the intersection of Brisbane Avenue and Bowen Drive. The female driver of the car was cut from the vehicle and treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance paramedics before being transported to hospital where she died a short time later.
ACT Policing’s Crash Investigation and Reconstruction Team and WorkSafe are investigating the circumstances of the collision. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Coolo wins enviro award
Cooleman Court has been awarded ‘Champion of Champions’ at the ACT Government’s Actsmart business awards, recognising their Coolo Recycling Warrior’s program and Mirvac’s sustainability action plan.
Coolo Centre Manager, Irini Daglis, said the centre was now able to divert over 88% of its waste from landfill, with over 60 tonnes a month recycled across organics, cardboard and mixed recycling categories.
Ms Daglis said participating in the Actsmart initiative had helped the centre implement training programs for their retailers.
Since starting the work in 2017 when recycling rates were around 44%, the centre is on track to be recycling more than 90% of its waste by the end of 2019.
Other sustainability education for retailers has also helped deliver savings in both water and electricity usage.
German wine claims top gong
German winery, Weingut Georg Müller Stiftung, claimed the top award at the 20th annual Canberra International Riesling Challenge – Best Wine of the 2019 Challenge – with its 2018 Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese VDP.Grosse Lage. The wine was also named Best Sweet Riesling and Best European Riesling.
More than 500 Rieslings from nine countries – Australia, New Zealand, USA, Germany, France, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic and, for the first time, China – were judged at this year’s Challenge. Judging resulted in 57 Gold Medals, 104 Silver Medals and 184 Bronze Medals.
The trophy for the Best Riesling from the Canberra District was won by the Hunter Valley’s Brokenwood Wines with its 2019 Brokenwood Four Winds Vineyard Riesling, which is made with grapes sourced from Canberra District’s Four Winds Vineyard.
Mosques open doors
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community will open the doors to all its mosques across Australia on Saturday 26 October 10am-4pm to celebrate National Mosque Open Day.
In Canberra, the public can visit the Prayer Centre, 9/90 Barrier Street, Fyshwick.
Local residents will have the opportunity to take guided tours, see exhibitions on display and attend Q&A sessions.
As part of National Unity Week, the day celebrates diversity and brings communities together.
