Fire forces 1,000 apartment block residents to evacuate

Approximately 1,000 people were evacuated from the Ivy Apartments on Irving Street in Phillip around 1.30am today, Tuesday 8 September, due to smoke logging on several floors of the building.

Firefighters extinguished an electrical fire located in a lift on the 8th floor of the apartment building.

ACT Fire & Rescue then ventilated the building and monitored air quality to ensure it was safe for residents to return.

By around 3.10am, residents were able to return to the building following atmospheric monitoring by ACT Fire & Rescue that deemed air quality in the Ivy Apartments as safe.
