The Easter double demerit points period has started with six collisions on ACT roads yesterday, Thursday 14 April, and more than 20 drivers caught doing the wrong thing. 

Despite the deterrent of double the usual demerit points applying to all mobile phone offences, the lure of the phone proved too strong for 18 drivers who were detected by ACT Road Policing officers yesterday (Thursday, 14 April 2022). 

ACT Road Policing officers were also targeting people who chose to drink and drive yesterday, with one team conducting 235 random breath tests. Three offences were detected, all at least twice the legal limit, with one driver registering 0.146, almost three times the 0.05 limit. 

The highest speed recorded by police yesterday was 130km/h in the 80km/h zone on Horse Park Drive, Harrison. A 28-year-old man from the suburb of Ngunnawal, on a Probationary licence, received a fine of $1841 and 12 demerit points suspending his right to drive in the ACT. 

ACT Policing responded to six collisions in Canberra yesterday, most caused by people not driving to the conditions. Drivers are reminded to slow down, and allow more time than usual to complete their journey during the Easter period. 

Double demerit point periods will be in place until midnight Monday night 18 April, and include all mobile phone, speeding, seatbelt, and riding without a helmet offences. All other traffic offences will incur one additional demerit point.
