Floating saunas get tick of approval for Lake Burley Griffin

Things are heating up on Lake Burley Griffin with the National Capital Authority (NCA) officially giving the green light for floating saunas to set sail.

The approval comes after Providence NDR Pty Ltd, operators of the Lake Derby Floating Sauna in Tasmania, was granted a licence to manage the sauna in March 2024, followed by public consultation in August on its proposed location, design, and materials.

Providence is targeting the commencement of operations in early 2025.

The initial proposal from Providence featured two saunas on one floating pontoon at Yarralumla Beach East, with changing rooms and a gathering space.

The proposal included the following key elements:

  • A 78.8m2 pontoon that will include two saunas, changing rooms and a gathering space.
  • A 10.5-metre-long gangway connecting the floating sauna to the land.
  • 4.2m high sauna structures and changing rooms on the floating pontoon.
