Food for thought: Canberra hospitality

Canberra hospitality recognised

Canberra’s hospitality industry was recognised at the 2019 Australian Capital Territory Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence in September. Caterer of the Year went to Hotel Realm in Barton, while Café of the Year went to Gather in Braddon and Restaurant of the Year to Raku in the City. Daana Indian in Curtin and Hotel Realm each took out two awards, Consumer Vote and Best Indian/Sub-Continent restaurant for Daana and Caterer of the Year and Function/Convention Centre Caterer for Realm. Raku took out three awards, adding Chef of the Year for Hao Chen and Best Asian Restaurant to its list.

Canberra winemaker celebrated

Canberra winemaker Sarah McDougall has been named ‘Owner/Operator of the Year’ at the Australian Women in Wine Awards, held in New York in September. Sarah and her husband Anthony (pictured) bought Lake George Winery in 2018, and this year launched a new look for the brand.

Oktoberfest at Wild Brumby

Wild Brumby distillery is hosting an Oktoberfest event over the October long weekend, with the Cooma Oom-pah-pah band playing on Saturday 5 October 12-4pm. There will be Austrian and German beer and schnapps aplenty!

Canberra wines clean up

Four Canberra District wines were awarded gold medals at the 2019 ICC Sydney NSW Wine Awards on 17-19 September, with reds the pick of the bunch! Gold medal winning wines were: Collector 2018 Marked Tree Red Shiraz, Four Winds Vineyard 2018 Shiraz, Lerida Estate 2018 Cullerin Syrah and Nick O’Leary Wines 2018 Heywood Shiraz. The four local wineries will join the other 68 gold medallists at the next stage of the awards, the 2019 ICC Sydney NSW Wine Awards presentation luncheon in Sydney on 18 October.
