Four people facing court over theft, vandalism incidents

Four people will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning, Monday 21 June, after ACT Policing arrested them on the weekend in relation to two separate incidents involving thefts or vandalism.

Two men will each answer to charges of trespassing on prohibited Commonwealth land, aggravated burglary with intent to damage property and joint commission of damaging property after they allegedly broke into the former Naval Transmission Station site in Lawson yesterday.

About 3.45pm Sunday 20 June, police received a report of trespassers at the site damaging security equipment and the former Naval Transmission Building. When police arrived at the site, the alleged offenders had abandoned a vehicle and fled from the building on foot.

Two men, a 21-year-old from Downer and a 22-year-old from Wamboin, NSW, were arrested about 5pm, when they were unable to leave the site as the gates had been secured.

Two other people will also face the ACT Magistrates Court today. A 38-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man have been charged with three counts of theft and one of providing a false name and address, as the result of an ACT Policing investigation into thefts of goods from hardware stores on Monday 7 June, Saturday 12 June, and Tuesday 15 June.

Police will allege that on 7 June, the two offenders stole property from a Majura hardware store; property worth more than $2,000 from a Belconnen hardware store on 12 June and approximately $3,000 of goods from the Majura hardware store by two people. On each occasion, the offenders exited the store via emergency exits.

On Sunday 13 June, police searched a vehicle that was observed leaving the Belconnen store the day before and located some of the stolen property.

On Sunday 20 June, police arrested two people in Narrabundah in relation to the thefts. Police will allege the two people continued to give false names and addresses to police, during and after their arrests.
