Free ’flu vaccinations for concession card holders

The ACT Government is making influenza vaccinations free for concession card holders at its Access and Sensory Vaccination Clinic from today.

Rachel Stephen-Smith, ACT Minister for Health, said removing the financial barrier for concession card holders would create more equitable access to ’flu vaccinations while boosting the ACT’s already high vaccination rates.

“While many Canberrans already get ’flu vaccinations across the ACT at GPs, pharmacists, and through employment-based vaccination programs, we know cost can be a barrier for some Canberrans who aren’t included in the Commonwealth’s National Immunisation Program,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“After two ’flu seasons with low case numbers, we are seeing more ’flu cases in our community this year. Getting a ’flu vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family.

“I strongly encourage all Canberrans to get a ’flu vaccination as soon as possible. Anyone who’s eligible for a third or fourth COVID-19 vaccination can also get this at the same time.”

Concession card holders and their children can make a booking for the Access and Sensory Vaccination Clinic in Weston by phoning 02 5124 3999 between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Free ’flu vaccinations are already available to eligible Canberrans from a GP or some pharmacies under the National Immunisation Program, although an administration fee may be charged.

People eligible under the National Immunisation Program for free vaccination from a GP include:

•           Children aged 6 months to under 5 years (also available at ACT Government Early Childhood Immunisation Centres)

•           Pregnant women (also available at antenatal clinics)

•           People aged 65 and older (also available at participating pharmacies)

•           Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over

•           People aged 6 months and over with underlying medical conditions.

The ACT Government will continue to work with community service providers to improve vaccination opportunities for people who might otherwise find it difficult to access a ’flu vaccine.

From this Wednesday, 8 June, Canberrans aged 5 and over will be able to get their ’flu vaccinations from pharmacists. Currently, pharmacists can only administer vaccines to those aged 10 and over.

This change will make it easier for family members to get their ’flu vaccinations at the same time.

ACT Health will provide further information directly to pharmacists today.
