Students at Goodstart Early Learning Centre in Jerrabomberra are hoping to encourage some new residents with the installation of a frog pond.
The frog-friendly habitat is one of 100 frog ponds that have been installed across the country as part of Bunnings and the Australian Museumโs National Frog Pond Building Project.
May marked the one-year anniversary of the successful community engagement program and Bunningsโ support of the Australian Museumโs FrogIDproject.
Australia has 240 known species of native frogs, many of which are under threat, with the pond building project providing an opportunity to teach students about the importance of looking after native frogs.
Bunnings Fyshwick complex manager Nathan McGrath said the program also provides an opportunity to promote sustainability and showcase the importance of plants and nature.
Mr McGrath said Bunnings provided the material and labour for the frog pond โwith six to eight team members that came out, some on their day offโ while the โkids provided the funโ.
Isobel Steward, assistant director at Goodstart Jerrabomberra, said they were involved with Bunningsโ school sustainability program when they heard about the frog pond project and it โdeveloped from thereโ.
Ms Steward said the older pre-schoolers have been learning about frogs, as well as building frog habitats in their room. She said the project has also provided a good opportunity to discuss sustainability and the environment more broadly.
