From Kattuputhur to Canberra: the rise of Phoenix

Phoenix ICT Solutions is a Professional Services Provider for the Australian Department of Defence and other Australian Government departments. Phoenix has steadily grown its capability and capacity to deliver a broad range of services by successfully supporting around $400 million worth of projects across the Department of Defence.

Vijay Selvarathinam is the CEO and Director of Defence & National Security for Phoenix ICT Solutions and the brains behind establishing Phoenix from a start-up to a multi-million-dollar company in revenue. This has been achieved through multiple defence contracts via government panels and subcontracting arrangements with major service providers in Defence.

When asked about establishing Phoenix, Mr Selvarathinam said: “As a proud Australian citizen, I wanted to give something back to the nation and assist the Australian defence industry”.

Phoenix ICT Solutions offer a wide range of consulting services with the necessary tools and expertise to support government acquisitions from concept to final capability. While most of our work is focused in the Defence sector, we are capable of supporting Whole-of-Government as well. We pride ourselves on the pursuit of excellence; it’s good for our customers, it’s good for our consultants, and it’s good for the defence industry.

Mr Selvarathinam migrated to Australia in 2003 to do his M.I.T at the University of Canberra and has been with Australian Federal Government departments for over 17 years. For the past 12 years, he has been working for the Department of Defence in various capability areas and has a thorough understanding of the Defence capability development, emerging programs and procurement process.

Today, Mr Selvarathinam is working as the Strategic Business Advisor for the Department of Defence specialising in Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, Electronic Warfare (ISREW), cyber space and outer space. All the consultants at Phoenix ICT Solutions have vast experience and domain knowledge of the defence industry.

Phoenix ICT Solutions welcomes the Australian Government’s expected investment of $270 billion over the next 10 years to bolster and strengthen Australia’s defence and national security capability. Phoenix sees this as an opportunity to assist the country in building its own sovereign capabilities. According to Mr Selvarathinam, “the world is changing and has already changed significantly and there are huge investments pouring into the Defence sector” which makes him feel proud to be an Australian. There will be huge opportunities in the Communications Engineering, Network & Systems Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, ISREW, Cyber and Space sectors in the future and Phoenix ICT Solutions will be able to assist the skill gap through their Subject Matter Expert pool.

With the growing demand for skilled resources, Phoenix has a vision to engage with Australian universities and establish a “Phoenix graduate program” to be used in building a stronger and mightier Australia. Experienced Phoenix consultants will assist those graduates in the Defence Capability Development (Reach Back Program).

Mr Selvarathinam is nominated under two categories (Executive of the Year and Rising Star of the Year) for the Annual Defence Industry Awards 2020 to be announced on 20 November.
