The long-standing Phillip Swimming and Ice-Skating Rink facilities are set for a significant overhaul, with a development application submitted by Geocon.
The redevelopment, called the “Woden Pool Project” by Geocon, will see the current 50-metre eight-lane swimming pool replaced by a public indoor 25-metre lap pool inside the apartment complex.
The new facility will also feature a splash pad, a learn-to-swim area, and leisure swimming zones. Additional amenities include a steam and sauna room, a program pool with a relaxation area, a cafe, and an outdoor play and entertainment space.
The project also incorporates residential development, with 286 apartments and rooftop entertaining areas planned on two 13-storey complexes. Of the 401 car spaces in the first stage, 54 will be allocated for public pool visitors and users.
Geocon has committed to ensuring the ice-skating rink and existing pool remain operational during the redevelopment, with improved seating, upgraded food options, and a redesigned website and ticketing system already in place.
According to the ACT Government, Geocon will need to keep the Phillip ice skating rink open until the new Tuggeranong ice sports facility is ready to be used.
Independent Murrumbidgee MLA Fiona Carrick is calling to save the iconic venue.
“Save Phillip Pool,” Ms Carrick said.
“The first DA for the Phillip Pool has been notified (with the documents to follow).
“It provides for two 13-storey towers and a 25m pool (and other amenities) at the bottom of the towers.
“We believe that community facilities are important for people to meet and are good for our physical and mental health.
“A new plan for rebuilding social infrastructure in Woden needs to be undertaken.”
The project, developed in partnership with Cox Architecture, will be delivered in three stages. The design aligns with the Territory Plan 2023, maintaining public use of the privately owned facilities.
