Get the scoop: Canberra’s gelato flavour revealed

The age-old question – ‘If Canberra were a gelato flavour, what would it be?’ – has finally been answered by the people.

Florence Gelato, which recently opened at the Capital Food Market, posed the question to Canberrans and were flooded with suggestions from the community via social media.

Suggestions ranging from vanilla (to match our ‘boring’ city) to bubblegum (the Canberra bubble), and even ridiculous answers of Bunnings Sausage, rocky road (to match our potholes) or even Kingsley’s.

Owners Matteo and Juliana Sassi were certainly given food for thought and after reviewing hundreds of creative suggestions, and it has led to them crafting a gelato they believe captures the essence of the city: The CBR: Crunchy Berry Ripple, a mix of vanilla, wattleseed, macadamia nuts with sweet swirls of raspberry.

“Wattleseed is our nod to the wattle trees that are emblematic of Canberra. The addition of
macadamias – a nut native to Queensland – represents all those who come from other places to
make Canberra their home,” said Matteo.

The gelato has a creamy, nutty base but – like our beloved city – there is much more to it than meets the eye. A brittle of caramelised local honey, macadamia and wattleseed adds pops of texture while sweet swirls of raspberry coulis cut through the gelato’s decadence.

“We wanted to incorporate some crunch to symbolise the less-loved parts of Canberra (roundabouts,
property prices and politicians), with sweet and tangy raspberry representing the gooey adoration that many Canberrans have for the wonderful parts of our city (our short commutes, lovely lakes, and great community),” he added.

“We hope that locals and visitors alike come to taste The CBR for themselves.”

If you want to taste Canberra in its gelato form, The CBR: Crunchy Berry Ripple flavour will be on sale as a limited edition item from 9am Saturday 10 February at Florence Gelato in Belconnen’s Capital Food Market.
