By the crystal clear waters of the Tumut River at Killimicat, between Gundagai and Tumut on the edge of the NSW Snowy Mountains, sits beautiful Nimbo Fork Lodge & Cottages.
Originally built as a private fishing lodge by a Sydneysider to entertain family and friends, the main building comprises a restaurant and bar downstairs, including cosy fireplace and pool table, and beautifully appointed ensuite rooms upstairs, plus six discrete cottages opposite.
Perfect for a romantic weekend or a restorative getaway in bucolic surrounds and fresh mountain air, guests can choose from an array of activities (some involve additional costs) – including riverside walks, scenic drives, fly fishing lessons/sessions, helicopter flights and horseriding – or simply relax and absorb the serenity.
To ensure the tranquil ambience is preserved, accommodation is reserved only for adult guests (the exception being parents with breastfed babies).
Similarly, the restaurant is open predominantly to guests, with some bookings available to locals seeking a special dining experience.
Nimbo Fork Lodge is just over a two-hour drive from Canberra; we broke the journey with a stopover in Jugiong on the way there and a detour via Tallagandra Hill Winery at Gundaroo on our return.
After checking in, we wandered down to the river, returning to the lodge to share some wine and cheese by the fire then a friendly game of pool before changing for dinner.
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; bookings essential. Offering relaxed yet elegant dining, the farm-to-plate menu champions regional produce – such as Snowy Mountains trout and Batlow apples – as well as a carefully curated wine list including selections from premium local winemakers.
Next morning, after a refreshing riverside walk we enjoyed a hearty breakfast before setting off home, refreshed and replete.
