It’s safe to say the Fremantle Dockers face a monumental task on Saturday 20 April when they travel to Canberra to take on the in-form Giants, who are sitting in second place four weeks into the competition
Speaking to Canberra Daily days after they took down ladder leaders Geelong Cats in Geelong, Giants defender Adam Kennedy says they’re ready for a serious contest against the Dockers.
“We’ve got another team who against West Coast didn’t make the most of their chances, but played a great game against the reigning premiers.”
Kennedy says they’ll be challenged regardless of whether Brownlow medalist Nat Fyfe lines up against them.
“He’s up in the top five players in the comp so if he comes in we’ll have to respect that … whether Fyfe plays or not our mids know they’re coming up against a tough battle.”
An intriguing element of Saturday’s game sees former Giants ruckman Rory Lobb come up against his former mentor in Shane Mumford.
Kennedy says it’ll be thrilling for fans to be able to sit back and watch them go at it.
“Big Mummy’s got a presence about him, his ruck work and his follow-up work is some of the best in the competition.
“Rory has got his strengths as well, they did a lot of close work together, so they’ve both got their different skillsets. It’s going to be a great battle.”
Having been at the club since 2012, Kennedy says he was ecstatic when the club approached him recently to extend his contract to the end of 2022.
“I was pumped, it takes me through to 11 seasons, which is something I’m extremely proud of and I hope I can repay them with my football and continue to strive to improve,” he says.
Kennedy is well acquainted with Canberra having played at UNSW Canberra Oval 14 times and says the side loves the support they get here.
“We hope to get the supporters down there and we love it when it’s packed out because it’s a biased crowd who get out and cheer loud, so hopefully we can put up a great contest for them.”
