Giants to help Capital Brewing Co kick tree planting goals

The Greater Western Sydney Giants will help kick off Capital Brewing Co’s annual Trees for Tomorrow initiative, by pledging to plant a tree for every goal kicked across the AFL and AFLW 2023 seasons.

The Giants will help plant the trees themselves during the Planting Day in October later this year, alongside the Capital Brewing Co team and members of the public.

‘Kick a Goal, Plant a Tree’ is an extension of the local breweries’ ‘Buy a Beer, Plant a Tree’ initiative, during which a native Australian tree is pledged for every Capital Brewing Co beer purchased in the NSW Snowy Mountains throughout the ski season.

The effort to restore the Snowy Mountains, which has been subjected to significant environmental impacts in recent years, is in partnership with Jindabyne-based environmental charity, Keep It Cool.

“We’re entering our third consecutive year,” said Capital Brewing Co’s co-founder and managing director, Laurence Kain.

“The opportunity to partner with the Giants really kick-starts this year’s campaign.

“This year we’re planning on reaching our target of planting 5,000 trees in total – a target we set when we launched the initiative in 2021.

“Since then, we have planted a total of 2,036 trees.”

Last year, the Giants AFL and AFWL teams kicked a combined 274 goals.

Giants star forward, Harry Himmelberg, who moved to Canberra from Wagga as a 17-year-old to further his football career, is the face of ‘Kick a Goal, Plant a Tree’ this year. The AFL star said the initiative further inspires him to knock last season’s number out of the stadium.

By planting 5,000 more trees in the Snowy Mountains, the effort will help draw down carbon and create new habitats for wildlife, reduce soil erosion, and increase biodiversity.

This could assist the recovery of native species under threat, including the iconic ribbon gum (Eucalyptus Viminalis), which has been subjected to significant dieback in the Snowys.

Capital Brewing Co also plans to roll out the original ‘Buy Beer, Plant Trees’ program across participating bottle shops and pubs, expanding it beyond the Snowy Mountains region and into metro NSW.

The Planting Day with the Giants in October will be followed by a celebratory barbecue (and a couple of cold ones).
