Ginninderry granted world-leading sustainability endorsement

World-leading and innovative ACT suburb, Ginninderry, has been recertified as a high-scoring, internationally renowned sustainable community displaying world-class leadership within the sector.

Ginninderry scored 84 points in their recertification rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star – Communities rating scheme, up from their 2016 score of 81.

Receiving extra marks for innovation, sustainability, and economic prosperity, Ginninderry’s high-scoring initiatives include 100 per cent of their homes having solar energy installed, their award-winning SPARK Training and Employment Program, and their public transport options.

ACT Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry, said “to once again receive a 6-Star Green Star – Communities rating is a testament to the high-quality features and detailed planning that make Ginninderry a liveable, environmental, and community-focused development.”

Sustainability Manager at Ginninderry, Jessica Stewart, said the high rating is a testament to Ginninderry’s delivery of a sustainable community of international significance.

“It’s really exciting for us at Ginninderry. We were one of only a handful of projects that were recertified throughout Australia, so it’s an exciting time for us,” Ms Stewart said.

“We hope that people use Ginninderry as a model that can be replicable and sustainable, not only environmentally but also economically, and that people take our thoughts and ideas and repeat them not only across Canberra, but also Australia.”

Ms Stewart said it’s a great achievement for Ginninderry to re-gain their recertification and said the significant efforts by the whole team is the reason for the high score.

“Sustainability touches on so many different aspects including the materials we use, the types of roadways and even the types of residents we have. Their contribution is really important, as well as the support from the ACT Government to help us honour our commitments,” she said.

“Our commitment is we will keep recertifying over the life of the project, which is set to finish at this stage in 2055, and to continue to foster sustainable ideas in the community and adapt to things that don’t even exist yet.”

Ms Stewart said being adaptable and flexible is key for Ginninderry’s future, and they will continue to think about innovations like electric vehicles and how they could change the way their suburbs are designed.

“We’re going to keep up to date with the things that are happening in the world, and learn as we go,” she said.

The Suburban Land Agency and the Riverview Development also welcomed the internationally recognised certification.
