GIO Stadium to welcome 6,000 fans for Super Rugby AU final

The Plus500 Brumbies have been granted the opportunity to play their hard-earned home Super Rugby AU grand final in front of up to 6,000 fans next weekend.

The ACT Government today announced it would allow 25% capacity of GIO Stadium Canberra, permitting 6,000 fans, following successful trials of 3,000 spectators at the venue in previous weeks.

Plus500 Brumbies CEO Phil Thomson welcomed the decision on Thursday, thanking the ACT Government for their ongoing support.

“The Plus500 Brumbies would like to thank the ACT Government and the Chief Health Officer for this morning’s decision,” he said.

“It’s very rare to be able to host a Grand Final and to allow as many people from our region to be there and be a part of it next Saturday night is something we’re really excited about.”

Sporting and entertainment venue restrictions were initially set to ease to allow 6,000 fans at GIO Stadium back on 10 July but were delayed following three confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Territory.

The increased capacity will come into effect from 19 September and will extend to the Canberra Raiders’ home game against the New Zealand Warriors on 20 September.

Crowds at GIO Stadium were increased to 3,000 capacity from 28 August to trial the increase in spectators.

The Brumbies, who have only lost two season games in the Vodafone Super Rugby AU season secured a home grand final after their win against the Western Force on 28 August.

The previously club announced it would offer all full-season-ticketed members free entry to the home grand final as thanks for their support during 2020.

“It’s been a challenging year for everyone and we’ve been so thankful for the support from our members through this time and we’re delighted to be able to give back to them with free tickets for the grand final,” coach Dan McKellar said.

The winner of this weekend’s sudden-death final between the Queensland Reds and Melbourne Rebels will decide who goes head-to-head with the Canberra side on 19 September.

Non-member ticketing for the clash will be available to the general public from Tuesday 15 September, availability permitting.
