Governor General honours 52 ACT Scouts

Sonographer Susan Deeble is among 52 Canberrans who will be honoured with an Adult Recognition Award by the Governor General on World Scout Day today, 1 August.

A member of Scouts ACT since 2001, Susan is a sonographer during the week and the Branch Commissioner for Training on weekends. She was the Group Leader at Mt Mugga Scout Group in Red Hill for over 11 years and then spent time helping with Mulga Scout Group in Richardson and Mt Stromlo Scout Group in Duffy.

More recently, Susan has assisted other Scout leaders through personal mentoring and guidance. She also established the ‘Fierce Women’ dinners as a way to deliver mentoring and support to women in Scouting.

Adult recognition awards are awarded to those leaders who have given valuable service to Scouts over an extended period. In the ACT, there are over 400 leaders who collectively contribute approximately 140,000 volunteer hours each year, to support young Canberrans challenge themselves.

Scouts ACT is bigger than you think. There are 30 local Scout Groups and some 2,500 members of Scouts in the ACT. On any weeknight in the Canberra, there will be 23 Scout meetings happening.

On any weekend, there will be Scouts in the outdoors challenging themselves hiking, camping, skiing, sailing, caving or abseiling; they might be working with the community on Landcare projects or collecting samples to assist the monitoring of water quality in Namadgi; or be sitting quietly beside ponds in Mulligans Flat recording frog calls.

World Scout Day commemorates the founding of the Scouting movement by Lord Robert Baden-Powell at Brownsea Island in the United Kingdom on 1 August 1907. What started as a small camp for boys in 1907 is today a worldwide movement for boys and girls that continues to make a positive impact on societies by instilling in young people the essential skills for personal development. The Scout scarf symbolises this unity and friendship – and has been worn by some 500 million Scouts worldwide for the past 115 years.
