It’s not a fisherman’s tale: Canberra recreational fishing and camping facilities will receive a $141,000 grant from the Federal Government to improve toilet blocks, traffic overflow areas and showers.
A masterplan will be developed for better amenities and more capacity at Blue Range Campground ($30,000). A new toilet block will also be built there ($76,000).
The Cotter Campground entrance and ‘overflow’ area will be remodelled to improve vehicle flow, camper spacing, and aesthetics ($25,000). Outdoor washdown stations / showers for fishers and watercraft will be installed at Cotter Campground and Pine Island ($10,000).
“We know how much Canberrans value our parks and reserves. This renewed infrastructure will help Canberrans and visitors enjoy some of the best camping and fishing spots around the Territory,” said Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Land Management.
“Blue Range Campground, and Cotter Campground are more popular than ever with people holidaying at home, and improved facilities will help make them even better.”
The funding comes from the Recreational Fishing and Camping Facilities Program, which will deliver $20 million nationally over three years, said David Littleproud, Federal Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management.
“This program will deliver new and renewed infrastructure for our recreational fishing, camping and boating community,” Mr Littleproud said.
In the 2019 election, the Coalition committed to more fishing opportunities for all Australians.
Jonno Duniam, Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries, said recreational fishing, boating, and camping made many Australians healthier and happier.
“Recreational fishing is an important leisure activity that contributes economic and social benefits to the Australian community, and is a part of the Australian way of life for all ages and for all socio-economic backgrounds,” Mr Duniam said.
“Improving facilities and access to recreational fishing, boating and camping areas will provide locals and visitors alike with better opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors by camping and fishing in our rivers and at the coast.”
