Grassroots football suspended until 31 May

Football Federation Australia (FFA) have decided to extend the suspension of grassroots football (aka soccer) for an extra seven weeks until 31 May, when it will be reassessed.

FFA CEO James Johnson said when the decision to lift the suspension is made it will be in accordance with government guidelines and medical advice.

Johnson also said that each state and territory would be assessed on a case by case basis, meaning some could return earlier than others.

“Football people are resilient, have a strong moral compass and, consequently, I am sure our community will understand this position.

“These are unprecedented times and at this moment, it is very difficult to predict what further measures will be introduced, or for how much longer current measures will be in place.

“We will continue to stay in close communications with our Member Federations in the lead up to 31 May 2020, to ensure that the individual circumstances of each state and territory in relation to the status of COVID-19 and the measures or restrictions imposed by individual State and Territory governments are being considered.”

Capital Football CEO Phil Brown thanked the local football community for their continued patience and support.

“During this uncertain time, I want to reassure the football community that the suspension of football activities is a temporary measure and we are hopeful of recommencing football as soon as it is safe to do so,” Brown said.

“Capital Football is working with FFA to ensure the long-term sustainability of our sport. We will continue to monitor developments and provide more information as it becomes available.

“I extend my sincere thanks to the cub committees and volunteers for their efforts, and implore everyone to continue looking out for each other.”

To help the grassroots football community stay active and connected throughout the temporary suspension period, FFA has launched an online Skills Hub. To get involved, click here.
