$3,000 donation for Calvary Auxiliary
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the fundraising efforts of the Calvary Auxiliary however a donation of $3,000 from Barmco Mana McMurray (BMM) has gone a long way towards covering the shortfall experienced by the Auxiliary. BMM provide specialist health infrastructure engineering consultancy at both Calvary Hospital and Canberra Health Services. “At both settings we have seen how valuable volunteers are in enhancing patient services and fundraising for equipment and other items,” BMM Director Steve Wheelhouse said. “The current COVID-19 emergency has affected many charities and volunteer organisations badly with donations and fund raising opportunities now drastically reduced when compared to the normally difficult circumstances. BMM are proud to donate $3,000 to the Calvary Auxiliary as part of our ongoing commitment to the community we live and work in. “
GIVIT donation of the week: Bicycle
Recipient: This service is supporting a single father and his son overcome homelessness. The father has had quite a traumatic life suffering mental health and alcohol misuse. The father has gone to great lengths to overcome his adversity and to provide a better life for his 14-year-old son. The family do not have much and rarely ask for anything. However, the son has asked for assistance with getting a BMX bike. He said to his case worker, “I can give you my old bike for someone else, it’s just too small for me now”. This young boy wants a BMX, not just so he can ride with his friends for fun, but to also save his father money on his bus fare to school. Lions give the gift of reading
The Lions Club of Canberra Valley recently donated copies of How to Catch the Tooth Fairy and Cowboys and Birdbrain by Adam Wallace, to 12 primary schools in the ACT. This is part of the Lions Clubs International’s Reading Action Program, a global literacy initiative that focuses on supporting grassroots projects to increase childhood literacy rates across the globe. The Lions Club of Canberra Valley has participated in the Reading Action Program since its inception in 2012, donating almost 100 new books to primary schools across the Territory. Budgeting and money management
A free budgeting and money management course is being held on Saturday 25 July and 8 August from 9.15am-12.15pm at the Tuggeranong Baptist Church, 1st Floor, 23 Garratt Street, Wanniassa (adjacent to Wanniassa Shops). This CAP Money Management Course assists participants to manage debt, budget, save and get more control of their finances. Fundraising auction
The Conservation Council ACT Region celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 by launching an online fundraising auction, featuring more than 90 donated items, including a home battery system and an energy-efficient hot water system. The auction is being run via allbids.com.au and will end on 26 July.

Nominations for the 2021 Australian of the Year Awards are currently open and it’s time to nominate someone you admire for the titles of Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia’s Local Hero. National Australia Day Council CEO Karlie Brand said, “there are always so many people doing amazing things in our country”. “This year, perhaps more than any other since the awards began in 1960, we’ve seen Australians overcome many adversities, help each other in times of crisis and carry out acts of bravery, leadership and kindness on a daily basis,” Ms Brand said. “It only takes one nomination for someone to be considered for the awards, but a nomination must be submitted for a person in order for them to be in the running.” Nominating is easy and can be done online at australianoftheyear.org.au; nominations will close at midnight 31 July 2020.
