National Walk Safely to School Day
Postponed from May due to COVID restrictions, National Walk Safely to School Day 2020 has been rescheduled to Friday 11 September. Now in its 21st year, the community initiative aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long-term wellbeing of Australian children. Apart from the physical benefits, regular walking also has a favourable impact on children’s cognitive and academic performance. More info: walk.com.au
GIVIT donation of the week: Toiletries
One of the many positives of GIVIT working with hundreds of different support organisations across the region is the understanding of exactly what is needed when. Currently, there is a huge demand for personal care items coming from a number of organisations. These are the essential items which enable a person to go through their day with a feeling of dignity, comfort and, importantly, health. Recipients range from newly arrived refugee families struggling to find employment, individuals experiencing homelessness, men and women reestablishing their lives after a period of addiction or imprisonment, and tertiary students trying to continue their studies with very limited part-time job opportunities. The items which are needed range from feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, body wash and deodorant. For safety and hygiene reasons, all products must be new and unopened. Travel size items are preferred, however, some organisations would be happy to receive full size items. Donations can be delivered or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category ‘Toiletries’ to view requests in the ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

Tuggeranong Day VIEW Club’s next lunch meeting is on Tuesday 15 September 11am-2pm at Viking’s Town Centre Club. Cost $26. New Lifeline Canberra online course
Lifeline Canberra presents a new online course, The Art and Practices of Self-Compassion and Reflection, which focuses on empowering and increasing an individual’s resilience. More than self-care, the course will focus on internal capacity, strength and kindness as well as educating participants in robust self-compassion practices.
