National Wattle Day
Canberra is lighting up for this year’s National Wattle Day (Tuesday 1 September) to celebrate Australia’s floral emblem, Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha). Eight public buildings (National Carillon, Bowen Place, Kings Avenue Bridge, Questacon, Telstra Tower, Shine Dome, Royal Australian Mint, Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre) will glow in yellow and gold on the nights of 31 August and 1 September. Free online pelvic floor workshops
Women of all ages are invited to attend a free online workshop presented by a physiotherapist from Canberra Health Services on Wednesday 2 September 5-7pm. Targeted to women who are experiencing or wishing to prevent continence or pelvic floor concerns, this workshop will provide education and practical self-help strategies that may be implemented straight away in the comfort of your own home. It will cover issues relating to: pelvic floor muscles, bladder and bowel control/incontinence, bladder and bowel prolapse, concerns pre/post gynaecological surgery. Bookings are essential. Diversity ACT Wear It Purple trivia night
The Canberra community is invited to join Diversity ACT for a trivia night to raise funds to support programs for LGBTIQ+ youth run by Diversity ACT Community Services and Wear It Purple. On Zoom – link from the Facebook page – on Saturday 5 September 7.30pm. People can choose to enter individually or can (COVIDsafely) bring together a team of family and friends in their own homes. There will be prizes for the winning individual/team and the losing individual/team, plus competitions for the best purple accessories and best purple food. Snow Foundation helps Zonta provide kitchen packs
Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast’s (ZCCB) support to domestic violence survivors has received a boost through a generous $6,000 grant from the Snow Foundation. ZCCB delivers kitchen packs to female domestic violence survivors and their families when they leave refuges and move into ACT public housing. The packs contain essentials such as a microwave or vacuum cleaner, plates and bowls, knives and forks, a kettle, toaster, saucepans, frypans, mugs, glasses and kitchen utensils, as well as linen and towels. ZCCB delivered over 66 kitchen packs from 1 April 2019 to mid-March 2020. The Snow Foundation grant, in conjunction with ZCCB allocated funding, will enable ZCCB to deliver between 80 and 90 packs to mid-2021. GIVIT donation of the week: Baby essentials
An organisation that supports children who are entering into emergency care is looking for items to add to their emergency Go Bags. When children are transferred into a new living situation because their current household is no longer a safe environment, the transfer can take place at any hour of the day. This leaves the foster/emergency care family with little time to prepare for the child’s arrival. The organisation creates Go Bags, which include all essential items for the child and guardian to begin their time together with ease and comfort. The items required include nappy cream, baby powder, baby wash, baby lotion, and brush and comb set. All items must be small in size, new and unopened. Your generous donation of these essential items will ensure a contented and peaceful transition for these very deserving young children. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.
