World Bee Day celebrations

The Capital Region Farmers Market will host a special World Bee Day celebration on Saturday 22 May 7-11.30am at Exhibition Park in Canberra. The Embassy of Sweden in Canberra welcomes the public to celebrate World Bee Day with them at a special event on Saturday 22 May 2-4pm – bee Swedish, enjoy a fika and join the conversation on sustainable food. Listen to the panel discussion and engage with the panelists – Professor Saul A Cunningham from ANU, Michael Claessens, CEO Regional Development Australia ACT, and Fiona Buining, owner Ainslie Urban Farm. Bricks @ Woden 2021

See the awesome displays by local Lego creators at the Bricks @ Woden show on Saturday 22 May 9am-4pm and Sunday 23 May 9am-3pm at The Woden School, 127 Denison Street, Deakin. Coordinated by the Canberra Lego User Group in conjunction with the Parents and Citizens Association of The Woden School, this show promises interesting and creative brick displays for all ages. Over 40 local and interstate exhibitors will be displaying Lego Technic, trains, a Great Ball Contraption, dozens of My Own Creations, plus a huge Hogwarts Castle and grounds. The funds raised from the brick show will be used for projects that directly benefit the students of The Woden School, which provides individual education programs for students in years 7 to 12 with an intellectual disability and/or autism. Move with Women exercise programs

Diabetes NSW & ACT will host Move with Women, a free group exercise program for women (18+) of all fitness levels and backgrounds. Two nine-week group programs will be held at Canberra City Health Network, 71-73 London Circuit; one starting on Tuesday 6 July at 10am and the second on Thursday 8 July at 7.30am. The program involves a one-hour group exercise session every week for nine weeks, with an additional 30-minute health education session every fortnight. Participants receive: 1:1 consultation and goal setting with an Exercise Physiologist; nine one-hour group exercise classes suitable to their fitness level; Move with Women participant booklet; resistance band; final assessment; and the opportunity to meet new people. Special Olympics Australia

You can help support Special Olympics Australia athletes by shopping at IGA during May. IGA’s annual Community Chest fundraising campaign will directly benefit athletes in the Greater Canberra Club. Special Olympics provides opportunities for people with an intellectual disability to train and compete in a range of sports at local, national and international levels. Canberra Seniors Centre book club

Do you enjoy a good book, a friendly chat and afternoon tea? You can have all this at the Canberra Seniors Centre’s new book club. Share your favourite reads and learn about new authors and titles from other members. Friends of the ANU Classics Museum

The Friends of the ANU Classics Museum will host a free public lecture by Associate Professor McComas Taylor of the ANU on India’s great national epic, the Mahabharata. On Thursday 27 May 6.30pm at Social Sciences Research Building Theatre, Ellery Crescent, ANU (opposite the Baldessin carpark).

Friendship through flowers

Vinnies Winter Appeal

Vinnies have kicked off their 2021 Winter Appeal, calling for donations to support the rising numbers of Canberrans experiencing homelessness and financial hardship. Providing vital services for individuals and families, Vinnies is calling for contributions to help children experiencing homelessness sleep safe this winter. The money raised from the Winter Appeal will provide the emotional and financial assistance that struggling families need to hang on to their tenancies and maintain a secure environment for their children.
