The ACT Government has opened public consultation on the new Woden transport interchange before works begin next year.
The new public transport interchange, incorporating the Woden bus interchange and future light rail terminus, will be built on Callam Street, and the new CIT campus will be built on the site of the existing bus interchange.
As part of the new transport interchange development, road improvements are planned in the Woden Town Centre, including new bus layovers on Launceston Street and Easty Street, and upgrades and improvements to local roads and intersections.
“Building a new on-street bus interchange on Callam Street was a key feature of the Woden Town Centre Master Plan, and we are seeking to deliver that vision,” Minister for Transport, Chris Steel said.
“The new public transport interchange is a crucial project for the transformation of Woden Town Centre, to ensure Woden is ready for light rail, and to enable the new CIT campus to be built on the site of the current interchange.”
The new interchange on Callam Street will replace the adjacent, almost 50-year-old Woden bus interchange.
“A new and modern Woden transport interchange will make public transport a more attractive, safe and convenient travel option, as well as enhancing Woden’s main street,” Mr Steel said.
The single transport interchange will integrate up to 18 bus stops. The Government is also considering including a light rail terminus.
The new bus layovers and facilities for bus drivers will be on Launceston and Easty Streets.
Part of Callam Street will be a dedicated public transport hub for Woden, and the street will be closed to traffic from Bradley Street to Matilda Street.
Mr Steel invited the community to have their say as part of the pre-development application consultation for the bus layovers and transport interchange.
The Government has sought feedback on areas of interest including (but not limited to) community impacts, access and technical feasibility, through a consultation period running for four weeks through to Friday 18 December 2020.
An Estate Development Plan (EDP) will examine and describe potential changes to area boundaries and associated utility services.

The Government will also run a program of face-to-face pop-up information sessions in line with health advice, so the community can provide feedback and ask questions in person, Mr Steel said.
The project team will consider community and stakeholder feedback to design and develop the new interchange, layovers and road upgrades, and the urban design guidelines that will determine the look and feel of the area.
