Heartbreak after pregnant woman and husband lost in Queensland plane crash

Heartbroken family and friends of a couple killed when their plane went down in bad weather in north Queensland say the pair had already picked out a name for their unborn daughter.

Rhiley Kuhrt and his pregnant wife Maree were reportedly travelling for a medical appointment when their light plane went down in rugged terrain in the Mount Hector range, about 30km southwest of Proserpine, on Sunday afternoon.

The Piper Cherokee was reported missing in harsh weather conditions after failing to arrive at Lakeside Airpark in Proserpine by 6.30pm.

Maree was 27 weeks pregnant at the time of the tragic accident and a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral costs for the young family.

“My brother Rhiley, his wife Maree, and their beautiful unborn baby girl Phoebe tragically lost their lives during a routine flight to see family,” the page says.

“We are all absolutely heartbroken and utterly grief-stricken. Three incredible lives were cut way too short.

“Whilst we grieve and try to seek comfort in each other, we ask for your help and support us in covering costs for Rhiley, Maree and angel baby Phoebe’s funerals.

“We would like to thank you all for your condolences, sympathies and ongoing support during this dark time in our lives. We appreciate it more than you know.”

Social media sites have also overflowed with tributes for the family.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators will collect crash site evidence, including recorded data and weather information.

They will also seek witness reports, aircraft operator procedures and maintenance records.

The agency expects to publish a preliminary report in six to eight weeks, followed by a final report detailing contributing factors in the crash and any identified safety issues.
