Local politicians joined members of HelpingACT and the Canberra community today to pack 60 welcome hampers for families who have recently arrived in the ACT from Afghanistan.
Helping ACT founder, Mohammed Ali, was joined by Federal Member for Fenner, Andrew Leigh MP, and MLAs Tara Cheyne and Suzanne Orr to packs the bags with fresh produce, such as apples and strawberries, as well as long-life food products, like biscuits and crackers.
“It’s a common misconception that there’s no poverty in Canberra,” Dr Leigh said.
“But our winters are cold, and homes are pricey – as a result, some Canberrans find themselves doing it tough. COVID has been especially hard on the most vulnerable. We’re lucky that organisations such as HelpingACT are assisting those who need it most.”
The hampers are now being delivered to Afghan evacuees who have arrived in Canberra.
According to Mr Ali, the role of HelpingACT is to “encourage members of our diverse society to give to those who need it to build a more compassionate and caring community”.
