Hidden ‘Alcove’ is the newest foodie experience in Braddon

CW Taste editor Anja de Rozario has found the ultimate foodie experience in Canberra, and it’s a gem hidden in Braddon’s coolest apartment building.

The new cocktail bar, fittingly named Alcove, can’t be seen from street view. Follow the corridor next to the parking lot of the bubble-windowed redbrick, 16 Lonsdale Street.

Alcove is a pairing menu establishment. Restaurateurs and two halves of a creative mind, Chef Kenny and Mixologist Ricky, work side by side to create a menu of perfect pairs, inspired by world destinations.

“The meal starts in Tokyo and moves South,” explains Ricky.

Rounding out the team, Will, the third owner, designed Alcove to have fewer tables and an open concept to better accommodate for fine cocktails and the height of customer service.

Some pairings on the menu are inspired by Ricky and Kenny’s childhood, like the Chrysanthemum and Wonton pairing that calls back to their younger years, getting inspired by the street food of Hong Kong, a bottle of chrysanthemum tea in hand.

They lead your taste buds through North and South Japan, Hong Kong, Bangkok, a brief detour to Pairs, before finishing off the meal in Singapore.

“It is a very unique experience that you can’t get anywhere else in Canberra,” says Ricky. “We think of it as high calibre cocktail food.”

“We hope we really bring something fresh to the city and represent Canberra in a way that stands apart from other cities.”
