Home Energy Tune-Up for vulnerable Canberrans

More Canberrans will be able to tune up their home energy needs in simple and cost-effective ways, thanks to a new program run by Care and St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn, and funded by the ACT Government.

The Home Energy Tune-Up was launched at a pop-up stall in the Canberra Centre on Friday.  Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction, and representatives from both the partnering organisations attended.

Care’s Financial Capability Officers can help consumers review their energy bills and usage, set up bill-paying systems, access concessions and rebates, and link to hardship arrangements.

Vinnies Energy Efficiency Officers can provide practical tips and strategies to save on energy bills and connect households with free home energy assessments.

Care and Vinnies will train frontline workers who support vulnerable Canberrans, such as older people, people with disabilities, and First Nations people, to improve referral pathways to Care’s and Vinnies energy programs and energy efficiency support offered via ACT Government programs and financial incentives.

Energy consumption and rising household costs are key concerns for all Australians. Care’s CEO, Carmel Franklin, and Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn CEO, Lucy Hohnen, say this is even more so for vulnerable households; some Canberrans accessing their services must decide whether to heat or eat.

Care and Vinnies have provided valuable community support services for many years. This program, funded by the ACT Government, will allow both the organisations to continue and expand this support to consumers wanting to review their home energy needs.
