Homeschool Open Day for Canberrans

The Canberra region homeschooling community will hold a Homeschool Open Day on Monday 22 May, so parents can learn why homeschooling is a valid educational option.

“Unschooling, Steiner, Charlotte Mason, classical, eclectic: there are as many ways to home educate as there are homeschoolers –but to newcomers, this can often feel overwhelming,” organiser and unschooling mum Ilaria Catizone said.

Home education is legal in all states and territories in Australia, and registration is fairly simple, but requirements vary from state to state. Again, this can feel overwhelming at first, Ms Catizone said.

“At the open day, we will discuss homeschool registration in the ACT and NSW as well as some of the most popular ways to do it, with the idea of providing potential new homeschoolers with an easy way of assessing if this path can be for them.”

Event attendees can meet parents and children who have always homeschooled, and others who transitioned from school.

Homeschooling parents and their children will be available to answer such questions as:

  • What about Socialisation?
  • Will my children learn enough?
  • How can I homeschool if I am not a teacher?
  • What if my kids just want to play video games all day?
  • It’s OK while they are little, but not for high school, right?
  • What happens after year 10?
  • What about University?

The Homeschool Open Day will be held at O’Connor Uniting Church Hall, corner of Scrivener and Brigalow Streets, O’Connor on Monday 22 May. Drop in anytime between 4 and 7 pm. More details at https://homeschoolopendaycanberra.weebly.com/

Even though this event will be held on Church grounds, Ms Catizone said the homeschooling community is varied and welcoming, including many different religions and atheists alike.
