Hospital patients permitted two visitors

Restrictions for hospital visitors will be eased slightly from tomorrow, Monday 26 October, when hospital patients in the ACT will be allowed two visitors.

The changes will allow two visitors per patient on each site, per day, with the visitors able to see the patient at the same time or separately during visiting hours. Health services have asked children under 17 do not attend wherever possible.

People attending outpatient or community health clinics are asked to continue to come alone where possible, with support limited to one other person. Women admitted for birthing care can have up to two support people, however, this must be pre-arranged with obstetric and midwifery staff.

“We are pleased that as COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease across our city, we can make these changes to restrictions in our hospitals and health clinics,” said Clinical Director for the ACT COVID-19 response, Imogen Mitchell.

“We know how hard it has been for Canberrans affected by the restrictions, and we thank the community for their continued support as we seek to protect the health and safety of our staff, patients and their families.”

Exemptions to the restrictions for hospital visitors will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with the relevant clinical staff.

Professor Mitchell said health screening would continue to at all health facilities, and outpatients who refuse to participate may be refused entry.

“It ensures health services have the means to contact trace if needed, and has helped us to keep our staff, patients and their families safe,” she said.

“Please remember to be kind and respectful to our staff as they go about their business to keep our patients and community safe.”
