Ongoing industrial action is set to affect more bin collections, with household waste and recycling collections to be missed in Belconnen, Gungahlin and the Inner North next week.
Some Belconnen and Gungahlin suburbs will not have their bins collected on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November, while some residents in Tuggeranong and Woden who usually have a Tuesday collection will have their bins collected two days later than usual, on Thursday 19 November.
Household waste collections will not occur on Wednesday in Amaroo, Bonner, Crace, Forde, Jacka, Moncrieff, Ngunnawal, Palmerston and Taylor, while waste and recycling collections will be missed in Casey, Charnwood, Dunlop, Evatt, Flynn, Fraser, Hall, Melba, Nicholls and Spence.
Thursday’s missed collections include household waste in Cook, Dunlop, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Latham, Macgregor, Macquarie, Scullin, Strathnairn and Weetangera, with waste and recycling to be missed in Aranda, Belconnen, Bruce, Evatt, Florey, Giralang, Kaleen, Lawson, Lyneham (north of Ginninderra Drive), McKellar and Page.
On Friday 20 November, parts of the Inner North and Inner South that usually have a bin collection on that day may experience missed collections with residents still encouraged to put their bins out for collection.
The scheduled strikes by drivers employed by contracted company, Suez, have resulted in missed bin collections in over 40 Canberra suburbs since the beginning of the month.
According to Shadow Minister for City Services Nicole Lawder, thousands of Canberra residents’ usual garbage collection services have been disrupted over the past weeks due to a scheduled truck driver strike over a pay dispute. Forty Canberra suburbs have been directly affected, the majority of which are on the southside.
“Many Canberrans are already suffering with cost of living pressures under this government’s expensive rates regime. The least the government can do is ensure that these basic services are provided,” Ms Lawder said.
“Canberrans work hard and shouldn’t have to be carting their rubbish around to drop off sites because the government fails to deliver the most basic services.
“Not everyone is physically able to drop off their garbage, nor does everyone have a vehicle to do so and it is disappointing that the government hasn’t made alternative options for these residents.
“Less than one month into this new Labor-Greens Government and they can’t even ensure that residents’ garbage gets collected. Basic government service standards continue to fall and of course, it’s mostly the southside that once again suffers the consequences,” she said.
Missed bin collections won’t be caught up, however, there are number of drop-off sites that are temporarily accepting household waste from affected suburbs.
Recycling can be dropped off free at the Government’s recycling centres in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Mitchell, Phillip and Tuggeranong.
Green waste, bulky waste and wheeled bin assistance service collections are not affected by the industrial action and will continue as normal.
