Genuine community involvement in addressing Tharwa’s water supply issues is essential to deliver solutions that are acceptable to the community and government alike, according to the Standing Committee on Environment and Transport and City Services.
The Committee tabled a report on the Inquiry into the supply of water to the Tharwa community on Friday 13 March, with five recommendations.
The report recommends the ACT Government conducts a co-design consultation process with the Tharwa community and other stakeholders in any plans for the construction of non-potable water supply infrastructure in the village (38km south of Canberra CBD), and give consideration to expanding this supply’s purpose beyond firefighting.
The report further recommends that the ACT Government considers water security in Tharwa now and into the future by exploring all options to provide a long-term solution to the village’s water supply issues.
The Committee was tasked to inquire into and report on the supply of water to the Tharwa community, with particular reference to: the direction and progress of the ‘Non-Potable Water Supply at Tharwa for Firefighting project’; the implementation of recommendations from the ‘Tharwa Village Plan’ 2018; historic issues surrounding the supply of potable and non-potable water to the village; and the projected growth of the village and how this is accommodated in water supply planning.
