Building an Empire
Empire by Austin Maynard Architects has been shortlisted for the Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards in the Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions). The project claimed this honour in the 2019 ACT Architecture Awards alongside the Territory’s top award, the Canberra Medallion. The aim for the project was to retain as much of the existing character as possible. The result was two added pavilions, sympathetic to the existing house, but distinctly contemporary in detail. Edgeworth Apartments by Cox Architecture have also been shortlisted in the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing category. Winners will be announced on Thursday 7 November.
Iconic architecture
Design Canberra is shining a light on John Andrews and his ‘aggressive, utopian’ architecture as part of this year’s Design Canberra Festival, 4-24 November. There will be exhibitions exploring Andrews’ work as well as a bus tour and a public conversation with Tim Ross. This year’s festival also recognises the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus design movement, while Living Rooms is a highlight of the program, exploring acclaimed Canberra houses. The festival program offers a range of free and paid activities.

Curated combos
To help homeowners coordinate their kitchen design, Stegbar has partnered with Caesarstone and Polytec for the launch of its new Create Splashbacks range to come up with colour and material palates that tie into contemporary home styles. The new collection has been curated by designer and trend forecaster, Marylou Cafaro and includes coloured, mirror and metallic hues in a range of glass finishes. “The aim was to create understated refined spaces that speak to quality and longevity,” Marylou says. “A decade ago splashbacks stood out, but now they need to blend in with the whole home design and be an integral part of the joinery and space.”

Durable decking
Boral Timber has introduced a more robust and easier to install decking to its hardwood range. The new 600 Series 22mm decking is available in the popular Australian species Spotted Gum.
