Garden Releaf Day is on Sunday 24 March with people encouraged to take on the #30greenminutes challenge and get in the garden, get healthy and have fun. Garden Releaf Australia’s core aim is to generate greater awareness of the health and wellbeing benefits associated with getting in a garden and enjoying the living greenery. Garden Releaf Day also aims to raise money to support the work of Beyond Blue.

Prepare for puppies
National Puppy Day is on Saturday 23 March with PetSafe Brand Australia reminding people to plan and prepare before purchasing a puppy. Around 450,000 puppies are purchased in Australia each year – but it’s estimated that around 250,000 of them are surrendered or abandoned within a year. Things to consider when planning for a puppy include: choose a pet that fits your lifestyle; how active are you really; what is your living space like; be prepared before you bring home your new puppy; create a designated puppy space; and be patient with your new puppy.
Handmade Canberra
The best local and regional talent will be in the spotlight at the Handmade Market at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March 10am-4pm. Canberra designers, artisans and producers will be in abundance at the market, giving visitors the chance to experience the best of the region right on their doorstep. While entry is free, Handmade Canberra has invited local charity Menslink to collect donations at the entry points to the market.
Untold Stories
Hear Ric Thorp AM, New Parliament House architect of Mitchell Giurgola Thorp, share his untold stories about its design and construction. Journalist Helen Pitt (pictured), author of The House, which details what went on behind the scenes in building the Sydney Opera House, will also be speaking. The event is on Monday 25 March 5-7.30pm at the Common Room, University House, ANU.

Stair and balcony safety
The Australian Balustrade Association is a new professional body to promote stair and balcony safety. Launched today, 21 March, the main purpose of the new national association is to prevent death or injury due to non-compliant, unsuitable or ageing balustrade installations for stairs and balconies, and in the construction of high-rise buildings.
