Inside & out: Outdoor trends

The latest in news, trends and happenings for the home.

Outdoor trends

Based on photos Houzz users saved to their Ideabooks most often from January through May, according to Houzz Australia and New Zealand editor, Vanessa Walker, three key trends we can expect to appear this spring include:

  • outdoor entertaining (try a circular seating arrangement around a fire pit to encourage conversation and a warm atmosphere)
  • the look of exterior furniture moving closer to that of interior furniture
  • modest luxury with homeowners reducing or completely removing lawn and introducing features such as outdoor kitchens, decking and pergolas.

Colour theory

Looking to update the colour of your home? According to Lisa Rickert, founder and CEO of Jolie Home, you need to consider a room’s overall style when selecting colours for the space. Take into account the colours of all of the surfaces– such as walls, floors, ceilings, furniture and accessories – to make sure they are coordinated with appropriate contrast between them. If you’re going for a Scandi style, keep it light using as much white as possible for walls, floors and ceilings. Incorporate as many natural materials as possible using a minimalist approach to furnishings. Another popular style is Modern Farmhouse, which combines a mix of neutral colours and loads of texture.
