Brumbies championship winning scrumhalf Joe Powell will depart the club after six seasons to start a fresh challenge with the Melbourne Rebels in 2021.
Powell has been a mainstay of the Brumbies side over the last few seasons, racking up 73 appearances since making his debut in 2015 and was the starting number nine in the club’s 28-23 grand final victory over the Queensland Reds.
Powell said he was grateful for everything the Brumbies had done for him and he was happy to be leaving on a high note.
“It’s been a dream come true to represent the Brumbies,” said Powell.
“To play one time for the club was incredible, but to play 73 times and go out winning a trophy is a special feeling and I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time with the club.
“The Brumbies gave me an opportunity to play professional rugby in my hometown and for that I’ll always be grateful.
“Playing for the Canberra community was an honour and I want to thank the Brumbies family for all their support during the years.
“I’m happy to be continuing my career in Australia and I’m looking forward to a new challenge in Melbourne.”
The most likely replacement for the Brumbies’ starting number nine is Nic White, who re-joined the club during the 2020 season after spending time in France and England. Issak Fines and Ryan Lonergan are also options for the scrumhalf position after playing some minutes there this season.
Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said it was tough to lose Powell but wished him well with his future endeavours.
“It’s tough to see Joey going, he’s a leader in the team and someone who loves the club,” said McKellar.
“I’ve coached Joe for a long time, here at the Brumbies and with the Tuggeranong Vikings and it’s been a pleasure to see his growth over the years.
“I’ve no doubt Joe will be a success wherever he goes, and I wish him all the best for the future.”
