ACT Greens MLA Johnathan Davis, accused of serious sexual misconduct on Friday, will resign from both his party and the ACT Legislative Assembly.
“On Sunday night, Johnathan Davis advised me of his intention to resign as an MLA and relinquish his ACT Greens party membership,” ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury said. “He is providing a letter to the Speaker [Joy Burch MLA] informing her of this decision.”
Police are investigating allegations of “possible sexual interactions with young people” against Mr Davis. Reports suggest Mr Davis had sex with one underage person (aged 15) and a relationship with another teen (aged 17). Mr Davis stood down on Friday.
“The ACT Greens take the conduct of our MLAs seriously, and believe Canberrans should rightly expect the highest standards of behaviour, integrity and accountability from our representatives and members in office,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“While there has been no formal finding about Johnathan by any authorities, the intimate information that has been shared about his personal life has caused immense community concern, and the ACT Greens Party room supports his decision to resign from office.
“We recognise that the reporting of these events may have caused distress to members of the community, and encourage people to reach out to services to receive support.”
Mr Rattenbury said he would have more to say on the matter on Monday.
On Friday, Mr Rattenbury said his office had not seen any information or evidence of illegal activity, but had referred the information to ACT Policing.
In a joint statement, Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Acting Chief Minister Yvette Berry had called for Mr Davis to resign from his position.
“These are very serious allegations against a sitting MLA, and do impact his ability to undertake his role,” they said.
