Josh Hodgson relinquishes Raiders captaincy

The Canberra Raiders have confirmed reports hooker Josh Hodgson has stepped down as the clubโ€™s co-captain a fortnight ago.

In a statement released on the club’s website, Hodgson said he informed the team a couple of weeks ago of his decision but remains committed to the team.

โ€œIโ€™ve made the decision to stand down as club Captain and I informed the team of this a couple of weeks ago,โ€ Hodgson said.

โ€œIโ€™ve been out injured for the past two games and Iโ€™ve been working hard on getting myself back on the training field. Iโ€™m confident Iโ€™ll be ready to play again when we play the Bulldogs next weekend.

โ€œI can assure everyone that I remain fully committed to the club and Iโ€™m looking forward to getting myself back to 100% fitness and helping the team get their season back on track.

โ€œI know internally weโ€™re all working extremely hard to turn things around and the playing group and staff have been fully committed to each other and the club.โ€

As a result of Hodgson stepping down, Elliott Whitehead has been appointed captain alongside Jarrod Croker.

Hodgson was promoted to co-captain with Croker at the start of the 2019 season where he helped lead the Raiders to a Grand Final appearance.

The 31-year-old is coming off an ACL injury in 2020 and was struggling for form early this season before missing the last two matches with a calf injury.

Tom Starling has impressed starting at hooker in Hodgsonโ€™s absence and is quickly becoming the Raiders best option at the position.

Homesick halfback

The club also confirmed they were working with English halfback George Williams who has been struggling with being away from home.

Unable to travel back to England due to COVID and with his partner expecting their first child, the club is focused on their wellbeing and identifying ways they can stay connected to their friends and family back home.

The statement also expressed Williams remains committed to the club.
