A 30-year-old man from Kambah has been charged with multiple driving offences after allegedly stealing a car, failing to stop for police, and driving erratically across Canberraโs south.
Around 8:20am yesterday, Monday 23 December, police attended a residence in Coombs following reports that a white Hyundai i30 had been stolen from an apartment complex.
Shortly after, the Hyundai was spotted at a service station in Chisholm, where the man allegedly became aggressive with staff before speeding off.
At about 8:50pm last night, police on patrol in Kambah noticed the Hyundai, which had registration plates allegedly stolen earlier in the day, stationary. When police activated their lights and siren, the driver evaded them by driving onto the footpath.
Around 5:10am this morning, Tuesday 24 December, police spotted the Hyundai in Greenway and again activated their lights and siren, attempting to pull the vehicle over. The man turned onto Scollay Street against a red light, drove past Tuggeranong Police Station, and ran another red light.
The vehicle continued along Erindale Drive and onto Sulwood Drive, repeatedly crossing to the wrong side of the road. The driver was also observed reaching speeds of around 100km/h in an 80km/h zone, continuing to drive on the incorrect side of the road.
As the vehicle approached the intersection of Athllon Drive and Beasley Street in Farrer, police deployed a tyre deflation device. The car continued on the wrong side of the road before finally stopping in the middle of Yamba Drive.
Police arrested the driver, a 30-year-old man who was under bail conditions at the time.
The man has been charged with two counts of failing to stop for police, driving without consent, reckless driving, unlawfully possessing stolen property, and breaching his bail conditions. He is due to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today.
Police are urging anyone with dash-cam footage of the Hyundai driving erratically yesterday or in the early hours of this morning to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference number 7934089.
