The Kambah Village precinct is set for an upgrade, with plans released from both the ACT Government and a private developer to improve the site and facilities.
The private development includes plans for a “major” redevelopment of the shops, including an extension to the existing Woolworths supermarket.
Minister for City Services and Member for Murrumbidgee Chris Steel said news of both of the developments is “huge” for the Kambah community.
“Kambah is one of the largest suburbs in Australia with one of the smallest Woolworths. The private development to expand Woolworths and [sic] will complement the $2.3 million in works that the ACT Government is delivering to upgrade the public areas around the shops,” Minister Steel said.
“Over 2,000 people in Kambah signed my petition calling for the shops to be upgraded, so it is great to see significant investment being made by both the ACT Government and by private owners at the shops to get it done.”
The ACT Government’s final sketch plan has been developed after community consultation. The plan details around $2 million worth of upgrades for Kambah Village, with upgrades to the existing playground to include new play equipment and a new shade sail.
Minister Steel said upgrades to the public areas will also include a “common green gathering space” with trees, gardens, barbecue shelter and picnic settings as well as new wheelchair-compliant toilets, an additional nine carparks, seating areas, new waste enclosures and upgrades to the pedestrian lighting and pavements.
The proposed extension for the Woolworths would extend the supermarket by 1,754sqm for a total area of 3,475sqm, including a BWS store of around 200sqm. As well as the larger supermarket, the private development proposal says there will be upgrades to the centre with a new cover at the Northern end, as well as new commercial real estate space.
