Katie Mack confirmed as ACT Meteors captain

Opening batter Katie Mack has been confirmed as the new captain of the ACT Meteors ahead of the 2022/23 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season.

Former captain Ange Reakes is taking a break from playing commitments as she prepares to welcome her first child in August this year.

Joining the ACT Meteors ahead of the 2013/14 season, Mack has played 58 WNCL games and scored over 2000 career runs since making her domestic debut in 2011/12 for the NSW Breakers.

Entering her ninth season in the blue and gold, Mack was excited to be asked to lead the team for the coming season.

“I’ve been looking for a leadership role the last couple of years so it was great to be asked to step into the main job this year,” Mack said.

“If you asked me only three or four years ago if I was ready to take on this type of role I would have said no, but I think I’ve really developed over the last couple of years and have much more to give back to the team, especially the younger girls in the squad.

“I’m really excited and can’t wait to get started.”

Mack has also demonstrated her commitment to the program by signing a new three-year deal which will see her remain in Canberra until the end of the 2025/26 season.

A three-time Bronwyn Calver medallist (Meteors Best & Fairest), Mack is a stalwart at the top of the order for the Meteors, and was named in the 2021/22 Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) WNCL All Stars Team, as voted by the players.

Mack also represents the Adelaide Strikers in the Women’s Big Bash League, receiving the Most Valuable Player award after a successful WBBL|07 campaign. Following her strong performances, Mack was selected by Cricket Australia to represent Australia A last season in a tour series against England A, and also made the trip to the UK to play for the Birmingham Phoenix for the inaugural season of The Hundred.

As recently confirmed by Cricket Australia and the ACA, the 2022/23 WNCL season will now feature a full home and away fixture, with each team increasing from eight matches per season to 12.

The upcoming season also coincides with a major milestone for Cricket ACT as the organisation prepares to celebrate its 100-year anniversary.
