‘Kind, sweet, loving’ COVID victim James Kondilios remembered

The double-vaccinated Canberra man who died with COVID-19 in a Sydney hospital is believed to be 23-year-old James Kondilios.

Kondilios had no known underlying health issues before passing away on 4 January in St Vincent’s Hospital after complications from the virus.

The ACT resident was a talented athlete and had a promising career in front of him after completing an advanced science degree at the Australian National University.

Kondilios was the recipient of a 2019 science innovation award for his work on which genetic variants of eucalyptus should be planted in preparation for 2030 and 2050 climate conditions.

He represented Australia at the 2015 classic powerlifting world championships in Finland, at which he won two bronze medals.

An emotional social media post from Stephen Ma paid tribute to his great friend Kondilios.

“The last message you sent to me was ‘couldn’t ask for a better friend’. Likewise bro, the years I spent with you will always be a great part of my life, you will always be on my mind to delight me, encourage me and guide me,” posted Ma.

“I will try to be a better person just like you bro, kind, sweet, nice to everyone and love everyone.

“We have been through a wonderful journey, and I want to show my best appreciation and respect to you for standing by me bro.”

A Facebook post from Acropolis Funeral Services said that those attending his funeral are invited to wear colour as that’s what James would want.

ACT Wrestling also passed on their condolences to family and friends, saying James was loved and respected by the Canberra wrestling community.
