Leanne Castley elected leader of the Canberra Liberals

Today, the Canberra Liberals Party Room elected Leanne Castley as Leader of the Canberra Liberals and Jeremy Hanson as Deputy Leader.

Together, Ms Castley and Mr Hanson will lead the Canberra Liberals to the 2028 election.

The news comes after Elizabeth Lee led the Liberals to yet another election defeat earlier this month.

Ms Castley has shared her vision for the party’s next chapter, focusing on connecting with the Canberra community and listening to their concerns.

“The Canberra Liberals team is eager to hit the ground running this term, listening to Canberrans, holding the government to account, and fighting for our community. The campaign starts now,” said Ms Castley.

“I am honoured by the trust my colleagues have placed in me and look forward to leading a united team dedicated to improving the ACT that we all love.

“The Canberra Liberals have a plan to stand up for our community and bring some common sense back into government. My team and I will begin by reflecting on the last election, rebuilding, and most importantly embarking on a listening tour so we can recalibrate our priorities with those of the community.

Ms Castley also expressed gratitude for the work of former leader Elizabeth Lee, recognising her dedication to the Canberra community.

“I want to thank my friend Elizabeth Lee for her leadership over the past four years and pay tribute to her tireless dedication in fighting for the Canberra community,” Ms Castley concluded.

Mr Hanson emphasised a commitment to providing an alternative vision for the ACT, promising to hold the current government accountable.

“By the 2028 election, Labor will have been in power for 27 years. Canberrans cannot afford to continue down this path of debacles and deficit,” Mr Hanson said.

“Over the next four years, we will hold Labor and the Greens to account and offer the alternate leadership that the people of Canberra are looking for,” Mr Hanson concluded.

After the election result, Mr Hanson signaled his intention to run for the leadership for the Canberra Liberals once again after leading them from 2013 to 2016.

Ms Castley was elected to the leadership five votes to four, while Mr Hanson won the deputy position five votes to four from Mark Parton.
