ACT Policing has fined a 24-year-old Kambah man after he was detected riding a motorcycle at more than 40km/h over the speed limit in a bicycle lane.
About 3.30pm on Thursday 27 August, police observed a black motorcycle passing a number of vehicles while riding in the bicycle lane southbound on Drakeford Drive.
As police followed the vehicle, the motorcycle accelerated up to a speed of 141km/h in a signposted 80km/h zone. The rider also changed lanes multiple times filtering through traffic on the road.
When the motorcyclist stopped for officers he presented an ACT Rider Learner Permit.
The man was issued with a $1,841 fine and 6 demerit points for speeding more than 40km/h over the limit and a $297 fine for riding in a bicycle lane.
The man allegedly told police he was in the bicycle lane because he thought he could use that lane to lane filter.
Motorcycle riders are reminded that lane filtering can only be conducted between lanes of traffic, and only when vehicles are travelling at less than 40km/h. Only a full rider license holder can ride between traffic (i.e. lane filter).
