An obscure quirky cultural event that’s loved and adored by those in the know, the Finnish Crazy Games will be back in Canberra on 13 October courtesy of the Embassy of Finland, Canberra.
Held at their Yarralumla grounds, a series of competitive ‘sports’ like air guitar, N-oar-dic walking, wife carrying, berry picking, hobby horse and mobile throwing will captivate crowds and competitors alike while a number of activities for the less competitive attendees will ensure there’s something for everyone.
Couples can still register for the wife carrying competition where the winner will take home the traditional prize of the wife’s weight in Finnish beer.
Other traditional Finnish fare like Munkki (Finnish doughnut), Karelian pies, Korvapuustis pastry, smoked salmon on rye and a number of native alcohol beverages will be available too.
There will also be a sausage sizzle fundraiser for CanTeen.
The Finns will throw their embassy doors open to the public with organised tours that will showcase the historical and architectural significance of the embassy and take participants through areas that are not usually open to the public.
A selection of these tours will be headed by the Finnish Ambassador, Lars Backström, making it a unique opportunity to be exposed to a wealth of knowledge about Finland.
It wouldn’t be a traditional Finnish experience without busting out the sauna, as they say “the human body is never as beautiful as 30 minutes after a sauna”.
The embassy will welcome guests into their luxurious sauna with experiences to be held in conjunction with the Australian Sweat Bathing Association, who will coordinate guided sessions and host tours.
There will only be 60 spots, all free, for the guided sauna sessions. Everyone will need to BYO swimmers, towel and a water bottle.
