Liberals promise intersection upgrades for Gungahlin

A re-elected Coalition Government would provide $30 million to accelerate planning and delivery of intersection upgrades across Gungahlin, Liberal Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja announced today.

The Liberal commitment would prioritise funding for upgrades that improve safety and ease congestion in Gungahlin, one of Canberra’s fastest growing areas.

Gungahlin has some of the ACT’s most congested roads, and according to ACT Government data, three Gungahlin intersections are amongst the worst seven in the Territory for crashes and accidents.

“Any Canberran who drives through Gungahlin regularly knows the roads need fixing,” Senator Seselja said. “There are dangerous intersections across the town centre, and congestion issues will only continue to increase as Gungahlin continues to grow.”

The ACT Government identified intersection improvements in Gungahlin as part of the major roads improvements program in its ACT Infrastructure Plan.

“This funding commitment from the Coalition Government is now on the table to accelerate these plans, ensuring safer and more reliable commutes for Canberrans across Gungahlin,” Senator Seselja said.

Barnaby Joyce, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, said the Coalition Government had spent more than $1.3 billion on the ACT’s transport infrastructure since 2013 across 29 road and rail infrastructure projects.

Senator Zed Seselja said the Coalition Government had delivered or announced more than $2.1 billion in infrastructure projects in the ACT in recent years – the largest investment in Canberra in a generation:  $26.5 million to duplicate William Hovell Drive, the major arterial road connecting Gungahlin and Belconnen, and other major infrastructure projects across the ACT including $115 million for the Monaro Highway, $46.7 million for the duplication of Athllon Drive, and $51 million for upgrades to the Tuggeranong Parkway.

The Federal Government also committed more than $88 million to the ACT Government under the Roads to Recovery and the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure programs.

“Only the Coalition will continue to deliver a better future for the ACT as part of our plan to build a strong economy and a stronger future,” Senator Seselja said.
