Lifeline Canberra Book Fair returns this weekend

Lifeline Canberra’s EPIC Bookfair returns to Exhibition Park this Friday – an eagerly awaited event for Canberra’s booklovers!

The Bookfair is open Friday 9 September 9am-6pm; Saturday 10 September 9am-4pm; and Sunday 11 September 10am-4pm.

Entry is by gold coin donation. All proceeds go directly to Lifeline’s local 13 11 14 crisis support and suicide prevention service, changing lives for the better.

“Books hold a special place with all of us, from a favourite childhood picture book to our first novel or the books we read to our children and grandchildren,” Carrie Leeson, Lifeline Canberra CEO, said.

“At our Bookfair, take a trip down memory lane with books from all genres, as well as, games, vinyls, puzzles, DVDs, CDs, plus the Collectors’ Room for all those special items. With over 195 pallets of stock, there will be something for everyone this weekend.”

One rare item is a signed copy of Murray Bennet’s Australian Punk / Post Punk Record Covers: The Art of Australian Music, Vol 1: 1976–1980.

Every book purchased contributes vital funds to support vulnerable people in the community, Ms Leeson said.

“It costs $26 to take a life-changing call in our Telephone Crisis Support Centre. At our Bookfair, this equates to around a handful of books, so every purchase is valuable.”

During August, Lifeline’s local Crisis Support Centre answered 2,483 calls, and the 300-odd local volunteers spent 1,374 hours on the 13 11 14 Crisis Support Line.

The Bookfair and Warehouse volunteers work hard every day to make our Bookfairs the professional and fun events they are, Ms Leeson said. “The care our volunteers have for every book and every Bookfair visitor is heart-warming.”

Ms Leeson urged the community to come to the Bookfair and support Lifeline.

•           Face masks are encouraged at the event

•           Stay at home if unwell

•           Practise good hand hygiene

•           Social distancing is encouraged
