Lockdown poses ‘alarming increased risk’ of child abuse

Today, 10 September, marks Australia’s longest-running campaign for preventing child sexual abuse – Bravehearts’ White Balloon Day.

Through COVID-19 lockdowns, child protection services across the country have flagged an “alarming increased risk” of child sexual abuse being faced by children who are stranded at home with their abusers.

Canberrans are urged to donate and share on social media while wearing white, to raise awareness and support Bravehearts’ goal of making Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child.

A donation of $12 is enough to educate one child about personal safety, body ownership, and how to speak up if they feel unsafe.

“The current climate with COVID-19 has seen more children at risk than ever, with children being trapped at home with their abusers through ongoing lockdowns,” said Bravehearts CEO, Alison Geale.

“That’s why we are pleading for Australians to wear white and donate this Friday, where their donations will be matched by our major sponsors so that we can continue to raise awareness of child sexual assault and exploitation, while also providing essential support and education services to families and survivors in need.”

Tuggeranong childcare centre, Busy Bees in Oxley, is joining Bravehearts’ crusade by virtually fundraising on White Balloon Day, aiming to lower the rates of one in five children sexually harmed or exploited each year in Australia.

The Busy Bees organisation are among the ranks of Bravehearts’ sponsors, matching all donations made on the day, dollar for dollar.

“We have already seen an incredible amount of support from Australians, having doubled our event registration record, but there is still time for the wider community to get involved and help make a difference for so many children,” Ms Geale said.

“Child protection is everyone’s responsibility and every child, in every community, deserves to feel safe and loved.”
