Man and woman arrested in Moncrieff after stealing car

A 28-year-old Moncrieff woman and a 39-year-old Watson man are scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today, 27 June, after they were arrested in Moncrieff.

The arrests came after a police investigation into the thefts of several motor vehicles in Canberra.

One of the stolen vehicles, a silver Hyundai Elantra which police believe had been used during the commission of other crimes, was observed by police in Belconnen on Saturday, 18 June 2022.

Later that day in Gungahlin, the driver failed to stop when directed to do so, and the Elantra was found a short time later abandoned in McKellar. Police seized it for forensic examination.

On Saturday evening, 25 June, police located the man and woman at a residence in Moncrieff. The woman was arrested immediately, and the man was arrested about an hour later after a negotiated surrender.

ACT Policing would like to thank the members of the public who provided information about the stolen Hyundai, including several people who made reports of it being driven suspiciously in the Gungahlin area.

The man will answer to charges of driving a motor vehicle without consent and breach of parole. The woman will face charges of riding in a motor vehicle without consent, three counts of obtaining property by deception, one count of making off without payment and breach of an intensive correction order.
